The true hero of the story: a Pet Doctor Barbie Post

July 13, 2011 by Dr. V

A couple times a year, I take a stroll through Toys R Us to see if there is a new Pet Vet Barbie being inflicted upon the masses. There’s a cat vet one, which I bought just because she has a slide on the exam table and that alone was worth the price- I mean, what cat doesn’t love going down a slide at the vet clinic?- but that’s not what really got me excited.

The Barbie I had to grab was the Fashionista Barbie. Those babies have moveable joints. MOVEABLE JOINTS! Now, why fashionistas need moveable joints but astronauts, veterinarians and bakers do not is beyond me, but maybe the good folks at Mattel just spend too many hours watching Paris Hilton contort on the red carpet and not enough seeing how women with actual jobs have to bend from time to time.

So anyway, I immediately took this Barbie, changed her clothes out for a pair of scrubs, and threw her into the Pawcurious Clinic to see what would happen. It quickly became apparent that she was so versatile and helpful, that she wasn’t actually a pet doctor at all.

She was, in fact, a tech. Now that’s a doll Mattel could really do something with.

Introducing Andie the Wonder Tech: a Pet Doctor Barbie Post

Hey Andie, I know you have 5 dentals to do before lunch so I was just trying to get a catheter in Mr. Puss here, but….

No worries! I’ll get him! Come on Mr. Puss, I need you down here, buddy.

Oh, ha ha, I forgot he needed a nail trim too. But he kind of got away from me again. And you know, my knees and all… would you….

That’s not a problem. I know you’re getting crabby Mr. Puss, we’re almost done.

Hey, I’m having a bear of a time with this jugular draw. Can I get you….

Say no more, doc. I got it.

You know, I just went ahead and did his ear cleaning, anal glands and nails while I was at it. Figured I might as well.

You’re the best Andie! Hey, I’m about to head out to lunch with Dr. Peppered. There’s just a bird in Room 4 for a beak trim, if that’s OK.

Of course! Have a good lunch.

Room 4? We really need to get these women a raise.

Shh! Hurry up and grab your keys!

Ummm….guys?

I love my new Andie the Wonder Tech doll. Almost as much as I love the real life technicians who do hard labor making us look good and pets remain healthy each and every day. Have a great week! If you’re at the vet this week don’t forget to thank your tech!

YAY TECHS! They make the world turn.
(As an aside, I’m looking at the sentence “It quickly became apparent that she was so nubile, so versatile and helpful, that she wasn’t actually a pet doctor at all.” And, um, are you sure you mean “nubile” there? Because that just went to a weird place.)

This is great! My favorite is her crawling under the desk to get Mr. Puss 🙂

And that dog looked like one of the dogs from “Up” to me, but I thought I was crazy … until I saw Kevin and knew that was absolutely the case – love!

What made you decide to do this?

I’ve been doing Pet Doctor Barbie posts since I started the blog, it’s just one of the recurring features. 🙂

Awww, as a tech I gotta say thanks for the shout out!
Also- wow, most dolls and action figures they make based on real actors usually look nothing like the real people. But holy moley, that Dr. McDreamy doll REALLY looks like him! It’s kinda creepy…

Thanks for the giggles! I think Andie the Wonder Tech may need a quick talk about appropriate work foot wear, or are stilettos the new non-slip clogs? 😉

Yay! 🙂 A Pet Vet Barbie episode – LOVE Andie the Wonder Vet Tech. I was even more impressed with Andie’s skill once a I got a look at her shoes…

While our vet clinic’s wonderful technicians do not have Andie’s fashion sense 😉 they are skillful and compassionate and fun and I value their care for my critters greatly. I was just there yesterday so send them a belated thank you for all they do today.

I <3 the techs at my vet's office. They don't usually wear such awesome shoes, though — perhaps I should point out their fashion faux pas to them? 😉

Thanks for the tech love! I’m no longer a practicing tech, but my 8 years of it sounded a lot like that.

Wow. If my claims for wanting to be a veterinarian “when I grow up” ever came true I think you’ve just demonstrated exactly what I would be doing in life. Combining Barbies and pet care and blogging about it. Awesome.

Yay another Pet Doctor Barbie post! It’s funny, I was in Tractor Supply the other day (do you guys have those out in Cali?). Anyway, they have a whole shelf dedicated to these Schleese figures-everything from penguins to Golden Retrievers, to horses to cats to elephants…anyway, I thought immediately how great those would be in your Doctor Barbie posts:) Isn’t it about time she has an emergency with an Ostrich? 🙂

As a current vet tech, I am in love with this post.
I actually had to show it to my boyfriend to say “See??? This is what I do all day and why i come home exhausted”!!
    Great job, Dr V!!!!!!

This reminds me that I need to schedule Hamlet for his annual vet check and also that I will bring baked goods for the front desk staff and techs. LOOOVE the Barbie posts, as always.

Count me in as one who was impressed with Andie’s shoes. Kind of like Ginger Rogers – she did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels.
