AKC/Eukanuba: Stealing Smooches

January 4, 2012 by Dr. V

Everyone knows you should start the New Year off with a kiss. I love kisses. I live for kisses.

Unfortunately for me, when I’m at work most dogs are not really that happy to give smooches. Sure they do at first, but one go with the thermometer and the honeymoon’s over.

This is one of the reasons I was thrilled to throw on my civvies and hit the Meet the Breeds booths at the AKC/Eukanuba show as a regular Joe. I thought, maybe I could ask owners about their dog’s proclivity for herding versus retrieving. Or ask about how long it takes to groom them for a show. Or maybe I’d just do what I felt like, and love on the pups and see who was the best smoocher- which is exactly what I ended up doing.

It was inspired by the Boston County Kissing Booth.

The French bulldog people threw down the gauntlet with their own booth advertising French kisses. (That’s Macho, by the way. You’ll see him in amorous action in the video.) GAME ON.

I started with them, but I basically hit on all sorts of dogs while I was there, from a teeny Brussels to a burly Cane Corso in search of affection and licks. Β At the end of the day, no matter the dog, they were all capable of some pretty incredible acts of affection even when it’s some strange person standing in their face and demanding smooches. And you will never guess who won.

I loooove dogs. If you couldn’t tell.

(Thanks to Diane and everyone who gamely held the camera when I shoved it in their hands and said, ‘point it at my head. I’m going in.’ I get to do the coolest stuff sometimes :D. )

Doggie kisses are awesome. That looks like you had a great time, what a way to spend a day! While I love the big sloppy kisses I get from my big babies, there is something about a little dog frantically kissing you in your ear that gets me every time.

It was hysterical. Frantic is just the word too.

I’ve transported a lot of English Settlers for ACES and I thought they were just great kissers because they were thanking us for helping them but I see it’s a breed trait! I still remember Millie who gave all kinds of exuberant kisses (the day after the transport finished she gave birth to 11 puppies). Were any Rotties giving kisses? Maybe I’m partial to them but they kiss a lot like a Cane Corso.

I didn’t get to them this time. OR the Goldens, OR the labs. Geez. I know what I have to do next time! πŸ˜€

So there were a lot of breeds represented? That’s cool if so. Next time you’ll have to be quicker on the mouth so you don’t get frenched unexpectedly! πŸ˜‰ Unless you like that sort of thing! LOL!

173 booths in total, I think.

I am SOOO jealous! I love dog kisses! And it is very rare that I get one from Clyde. I think he was trained out of kissing in his life before me. He will kiss your hand, but he’s only kissed my face about 3 times in the almost 5 years he’s been with us. That’s okay…it makes it all the more special when he does. πŸ™‚ I am in a state of serious kiss deprivation!

A WONDERFUL video, and what a great idea! That English Setter had a “thing” for you, I’m pretty sure.

He was a nibbler. At least he didn’t eat an earring.

Doc V I want your job, all those lovies (as my great nephew calls them) you got that day. The setter seemed to be the best, but they are attention getters. Looked like you had fun and that’s what it’s all about. Love your blog never miss them. Can’t wait to see more of the dog show and Africa videos

Wow, did you use your bacon face cream that morning? That setter was determined to lick your whole face. Too cut!

I love that you got such a kick out of that! Fun to see you in action, laughing and smiling. Some people are so weirded out by dog smooches so I love that you’re not. Although a vet who doesn’t like dog smooches might be a bit suspect, right?
