The Hairy Hambone in: GUILTY!

March 23, 2011 by Dr. V

By now I'm assuming many of you have seen Denver the Guilty dog. If not, it's worth it. The behaviorists will tell you, over and over again: Stop anthropomorphizing your pets. They do not feel shame or guilt. I don't know about that. For all the protesting that dogs forget what naughty things they did 5 seconds after committing the crime, that these intelligent beings simply disavow all knowledge and memory of their actions and are merely responding to our own disapproval, I know of way ... Drinkwell 360 review and giveaway!

March 22, 2011 by Dr. V

Congratulations to the winner, Marie Collins! I hope you love it! It's Giveaway Tuesday! My favorite day! Today we have something for all the cat owners out there, something that almost all of us have owned or have thought about owning at some point: a drinking fountain. Despite their well known aversion to baths, cats love water- as long as they don't have to sit in it. Turn on a stream of water in the sink and it's like a kitty magnet- zoom! In they come, tongues extended as they oh so ... Read more »

The Litterbox Chronicles, Part 3: The Box Buffet

March 21, 2011 by Dr. V

While the world has been in chaos and disarray, I haven't had a whole lot of time to spend pondering the smaller issues in our household: namely, Apollo and his marking. But I have been passively conducting an experiment with the litterbox, otherwise known as the Litterbox Buffet. When you are trying to make your cat's bathroom the Happy Place, one of the key questions you need to ask is "What kind of toilet do you like?" It would certainly make it easier if you could simply present the cat ... Read more »

I have a match, who’s got the lighter fluid?

March 18, 2011 by Dr. V

Pardon me a moment of exceptional sentimentality here, but I can't help it. I'm getting a little Linda Richman as we speak. From something that began as a flurry of e-mails amongst a couple of the Be the Change pals on Sunday, Paws for Japan evolved into a event with over 150 blogs, countless Facebook posts and Tweets, and untold participation- with only 3 days notice. It's like we posted a "hey, we're having a little cookout at the bay, BYOB" to the community wall at the library and the ... Read more »

Dr. V’s Kiss My Blarney Garage Sale!

March 17, 2011 by Dr. V

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, a traditional Irish blessing that seems particularly apropos: We're on this Earth together, And if we would be brothers, Fight not just on your own behalf But for the sake of others. I don't have awesome products to sell like the people in the previous post, so I had to resort to badgering other people to help me out to come up with some offerings. All proceeds benefit World Vets, of course. ... Read more »

Paws for Japan: Why Animal Rescues Matter

March 16, 2011 by Dr. V

As the world watches the horror in Japan worsen from day to day, and scores of people flee from the devastated island, a small but dedicated group of heroes are leaving safety behind and heading into the maelstrom. Among them, people whose sole purpose is to rescue the animal victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Much has been made of this video making the rounds. In it, a news crew comes upon a sad sight that is being replayed all over the country. Those animals are alive now, thanks to ... Read more »
