First of all, please don't forget the big Be the Change for Pets initiative starts this week! The Facebook page also has information, but as a reminder: sell something, at a garage sale, craigslist, ebay, whatever you wish. If it is posted online we will have a linky list so that everyone can list their sales. Then donate your proceeds to the shelter of your choice- it's that simple! If you have questions, you can ask here or over at Facebook. We're here to help! Secondly, I'm in ... Read more »

Dr. V’s Kiss My Blarney Garage Sale!
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, a traditional Irish blessing that seems particularly apropos: We're on this Earth together, And if we would be brothers, Fight not just on your own behalf But for the sake of others. I don't have awesome products to sell like the people in the previous post, so I had to resort to badgering other people to help me out to come up with some offerings. All proceeds benefit World Vets, of course. ... Read more »

Paws for Japan: Why Animal Rescues Matter
As the world watches the horror in Japan worsen from day to day, and scores of people flee from the devastated island, a small but dedicated group of heroes are leaving safety behind and heading into the maelstrom. Among them, people whose sole purpose is to rescue the animal victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Much has been made of this video making the rounds. In it, a news crew comes upon a sad sight that is being replayed all over the country. Those animals are alive now, thanks to ... Read more »
Paws for Japan
Like many of you, I have been glued to the television this weekend in horror at the disaster that has befallen the residents of Japan. At times like these, our daily concerns about Little League games, the price of gas, or frustrations about the stupid little things evaporate as we take a look around at all the things we are fortunate enough to have- loved ones, security, safety- and imagine them all swept away in the blink of an eye. We will donate, as always, to the usual organizations ... Read more »
Be the Change: Dog Days of Summer Shelter Shower
I keep changing the name of this Be the Change food drive. Sometimes it's the Be the Change Food Drive, Shelter Supplies Drive, Give them Something I Don't Care What Drive. Today it is "Shelter Shower" because I've been to something like 4 baby showers this month, and no doggie or kitty showers. So regardless of the name, here's the deal: Between TODAY, July 19th, and July 31st, I'm asking everyone- yes, YOU!- to donate something to a local shelter or rescue. It can be a bag of food, an ... Be the Change is BACK! And easier than ever!
People who have been reading my blog for a while know that I am a big proponent of helping animals in whatever way you can. It's easy to be intimidated by big productions and think, "There's no way I'm going to organize a $200,000 fundraiser. All I have is $5/an old towel/5 minutes to spare." This spring, I was fortunate enough to meet some amazing people at BlogPaws- people who felt, as I did, that there is no bottom or top limit on what determines importance. Anything, and everything, ... Read more »
Be The Change Challenge
A few months ago, Caroline (aka Romeo the Cat's staff, aka co-founder of BlogPaws) asked me if I would consider being a speaker at BlogPaws on the "Be The Change You Want to See" panel. I immediately said, "Heck yes!" followed up with, "But, uh, why? I'm not entirely sure I qualify." Caroline assured me that yes, they did want me to be a part of the talk specifically because I had zero experience and no clue what I was doing when I started out with the blogathon and Hounds for Haiti. Of ... Read more »
BlogPaws- if you missed it, I’m sorry because it was totally awesome.
You ever come back from a whirlwind event and just kind of sit there slack-jawed, thinking to yourself, "Wow, I can't believe I just got to be a part of that"? That was BlogPaws. I've sat in many conferences in my days, listening to various keynote speaker types tell their story, and every single one of them has some singular path-altering event where the skies parted, the sun shone down, and they knew that their life was about to get really interesting. I know, in that ineffable way one ... Read more »
