I've made no secret of the fact that I was a little nervous about heading to New York by myself to watch the Westminster show. I mean, I'm no streetwise chick. I live in the burbs. The thought of hanging out by myself there scared me, because based on everything I was told I had come to expect the following: Bone chilling cold requiring layer upon layer of thermal undergarments Unhelpful scoundrels who would ignore me, scoff at me, or mug me Cacophony And all I have to say is this: ... AKC/Eukanuba this weekend: join the party!
Tomorrow's the big day! For air time info, check here but it should be either 2 pm or 12 depending on your time zone. There's also an online Twitter party that will be going on simultaneously using the hashtag #AKCEukshow. I'll be there with some more Eukanuba dog food vouchers during the PST air time, 12-2 PST. I hope you can stop in! The show will mostly be covering the Best in Show finals, but as you know there was a ton of other stuff going on too. I put together a slideshow of some of ... Read more »
Behind the Ribbon: An exclusive interview with new AKC Champ London!
As a non-dog show person, I was admittedly nervous going to a big dog show like the AKC/Eukanuba show. I don't know the lingo. I don't know how to conduct myself. I was worried that if I admitted I was as clueless as they come and didn't know a triangle from a drum that I might be laughed out of the place. After all, dog show people aren't like the rest of us, right? They're kind of stuffy. Pretentious, even. Out of touch with all of us regular folks slumming it in the trenches. As it turns ... World Challenge TODAY!
The excitement here is really something. Today is the first official day of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, though the prep has been going on all week. Earlier, I watched the Bostons take the Breeders' Stakes preliminaries; the finals will be this afternoon. Aren't these dogs amazing? They just sit calmly and wait amidst all the cacophony. Tonight is the World Challenge, where people and dogs from 42 countries will be here to compete in a special World Challenge event. It's ... Read more »
Gimme the nip
We're feeding the cats their catnip right now. It's the best way to get them primed for zombie eating. Just so you know I'm drenched, muddy, freezing, and a tiger just tried to pounce on my head and my fingers are a little too numb to type more than this. Right after this Sitara pounced on the chainlink and tried to eat my face. I believe there is video of me screaming and scrambling backwards. So please consider a donation to LTB! 6 packs 9 lives shirtless man calendar giveaway up next! ... Read more »

Koa the *Star*
A couple of weeks ago, Kekoa and I were asked to go on the local news station to talk about the Nulo Campaign to Fight Pet Obesity and how owners can help their pets make a New Year's Resolution to take off a few pounds. They had us on the morning after Christmas, so instead of laying in a semi-gingerbread and eggnog coma on a pile of wrapping paper as I am wont to do on December 26th, I packed Koa up and headed down to the local news station at 8 am sharp. We got buzzed in by a ... Read more »
Laboceros update
The labocerous is looking so sleek and slim lately we may need to consult with the biologists to revise her taxonomic classification to panther. She can bound up the stairs now, which is a first for her in this house (and probably in any house, at least for some time.) As our time on the Nulo challenge winds to an end, I can say without reservation that I am very happy with the food, the customer service and the results. At 74 pounds, she feels measurably better, and she looks healthier ... Read more »
Bringing home baby: Tips on furkid/ human kid relations
Happy Monday! While Brody, Koa and I are enjoying the Pacific Northwest, I have a few more wonderful guest posts lined up for the week. To kick things off, we have the wonderful Sarah from Cole's First Blog with a topic that has been a popular request: Getting the pets ready for the arrival of a new baby! I will fully admit when people ask me for advice on this topic I draw a blank- I didn't do any prep ahead of time and dealt with the consequences of an attention-starved Golden who peed on ... The Koa Chronicles: Week One
Dear Diary: This week I started my diet. I was pretty sad about that because I watched my mom diet the last few months and she was crabby and yelled all the time. I don't want that, really. But the little boy who lives here called me squishy and I don't like that either. Mom used some food-in-a-box for a while and I have to be honest, it smelled kind of gross- and I'm a dog. Brody used to eat the cardboard boxes and leave the food behind. Diets are bad news, I say. I think maybe she ... Read more »
Top 5 Things to Not Say To Your Vet
Not if you want to have a decent working relationship with them, that is. 1. If you cared about animals, you'd do this for free. Vets hear this, on average, once a day. Many vets, like myself, are employees of a facility with no more ability to negotiate the cost than any other employee. That would akin to asking the ER doc for a discount on the OR fees at the hospital- even if I wanted to, I can't give my employer's services away. Expressing concern about the costs of a service is one ... Read more »
Happy Birthday Brody!!
One year ago today, I was in an emergency room with my vomiting daughter fighting with an ER doc about the most appropriate course of action. It was a bad day. Several hours north of us, a little Golden retriever was giving birth to a litter of puppies: 8 robust golden beauties and one, slightly darker, rusty puffball. One year later, he is a 65 pound whirlwind of trouble, fur, love, and goofiness resting under my feet. He is a reminder of what is important, what is real, and what can be ... Read more »
Hang 20
Last Saturday, we packed up the whole crew and went to the beach so Brody could take a surfing lesson. I admit it was a bit of an ambitious plan considering I hadn't even taken him to the beach yet, but the opportunity presented itself and I found it irresistible. C'mon, we're talking about a dog named Brody- if ever there was a name fit for a surfer, that is it. The surf lesson was organized by the local Golden Retriever Meetup group, which is really active and puts on amazing events on a ... Read more »
Humiliations Galore
To say it was an eventful weekend would be a bit of a understatement. This weekend was action-packed. However, I'm exhausted by all of it and I just want to enjoy my chocolate coma, so I'll leave all of that for later and for the moment, simply share the family tradition of humiliating the pets with festive holiday wear: Koa tolerates this, as with all things, with good humor. We will sit nicely but only if you promise great rewards. For Brody, liver treats will do the trick. In ... Read more »
Appearance is everything
After Emmett died, some of the hardest times for me were the quiet nights when my husband was out of town on business. Besides the companionship (yes, that was the only time he was allowed on the bed), I missed the comfort of having a fluffy, well-attuned barking machine keeping a keen eye and ear out for me 24/7. ...
