I admit things have been a little, well, extraordinarily depressing around here the past few days. It’s the nature of life with animals. But with lows come highs, so let’s end the week on a good note, ok?
This is Napoleon. Cute, isn’t he?
He was discovered cowering under a porch of a house in Tijuana, Mexico. The homeowners contacted their friend, a veterinarian, who got him out and realized he did not have the use of his back legs.
Tijuana does not have an animal shelter. In most circumstances, a dog like this would be left to fend for himself. The idea of rescue and rehabilitation is often a pipe dream in a situation like this.
How easy it would be to say oh well. He is a sweet dog. Perhaps he should be put out of his misery. It would be a kindness.
Fortunately for Napoleon, the veterinarian in question volunteers with the Humane Society of Tijuana, and they have proven themselves on multiple occasions to be undaunted by poor odds. He is sweet, they said, and he deserves a chance at life as much as any other pooch.
“None of us could picture Napoleon being ready to go,” says the Friends of HSTJ blog. “In spite of his injury, he is a happy dog who just wants to explore and conquer the world!” Well of course! He’s a corgi!
Another veterinarian volunteer, my friend Dr. Sarah, put out the idea of a cart for him. The support was unanimous, and the fundraising began. Last weekend, Napoleon got his sweet custom wheels.
Dr. Sarah said I could share this on the condition that I specify she was not responsible for the music selection.
It’s not that bad, Sarah. It kind of reminds me of the Academy Awards. Best save of the year? You. Way to be the change.
His journey isn’t over- Napoleon still needs his forever home, one that is willing and able to take on the challenges of a dog with a permanent neurologic condition. But considering how far he’s come, I am confident he will find that home soon.

I have sent the url for the video to the person who owns the wheelcorgis group at yahoogroups. If anyone can find him a home, I’d think they could….
He surely looks A LOT like a corgi…………….
Thanks for helping find him a home!

Thank you for that! I will keep my fingers crossed!

OH MAI GOSH it’s a corgi mix! /loves immediately
I want to take him home so badly, but he needs someone that doesn’t work full time. My love and kisses go out to him, and I pray that he finds the right one for him soon. I’m teary-eyed now, but in a good way. =’) Rock on, Neo.
Susie says
Wish I could take him too! But I work full time and I’m across the border, unfortunately. He’s a sweetie and I’d take him in a flat minute.
Dr. Sarah says
Susie, we’ll hopefully be adopting in the U.S. — is that what you mean by ‘across the border?’ I think geography isn’t too much of a concern here. But yes, ideally he needs someone who has the time to devote to him, so this does narrow it down quite a bit to people that either aren’t working full-time or are capable of staggering schedules with others in the family.

Sent the link to another girl at my vet hospital. She’s OBSESSED with corgis. (And we live in San Diego).

OMG what a sweetie. I see a spark and newfound joy in his eyes as he is walking and rolling along. Its like he knows he has a future. Bless those people in T Town.
Dr. Sarah says
Thanks for blogging about this, Dr. V. 🙂
Napoleon is a sweet dog with a lot of spunk. It’ll be really gratifying if we can find him the perfect forever home. 🙂

I’ve got a couple of friends with a corgi who were things of getting another in the next year or so. Unfortunately, long work schedules and a house with no way in or out without steps, split on four levels (yay, Baltimore townhouses!) makes probably not a great match. I will still send this to them, maybe they know someone.
