Brody is not Emmett, nor should he be. There is a lot I have yet to learn about Brody: his personality, his likes and dislikes and quirks. I am excited for that period of discovery. I have been blessed with such vivacious pets in my life, from crotchety Taffy to daft Nuke, mild Mu and the inimitable Emmett. I can’t wait to find out who Brody will be. I’ve already found that he, unlike my other dogs to date, has begun bonding immediately with people other than myself in the family. That is great. And yet so different.
Nonetheless, there will obviously always be things that call up certain memories, some aspect of personality or carriage that reminds me of my dogs past.
Brody has Emmett’s eyebrows. Quizzical, raising from one side to the other like Groucho Marx at some puzzling beetle or a command he has yet to comprehend. I like that they share that.
I never knew Emmett as a puppy. I like to think that he maybe looked similar to Brody.
Not the same. But some similarities.

Dr. V, I think I love your blog.
I’ve read over some of it–I started with the post about how veterinarians are in league with the evil pet food companies (full disclosure: I work in Consumer Relations at Iams/Eukanuba). I’ve never known anyone who went into veterinary medicine to become rich. And it totally ticks me off when people (who ought to know better) set themselves up as “experts” so they can slander a group of professionals who are what they are because they love animals.
I’ve also read some of your posts about Emmett. From his photos, he looks like a great dog. In fact, I was thinking how well trained he was, holding that donut on his nose……
In my brief time on your blog I didn’t see mention of Emmett’s passing, but I suspect the time may be near? Cancer really does suck.

I think you’re right Jess. I think Emmett would have looked a lot like Brody does right now. I often wonder what Cookie looked like as a puppy. I can still see a bit of her puppy face in her. And whenever I looked at Blade, I could still see him as he was at 8 weeks old. I wonder if I ever go the puppy route will I be able to separate the two. I think that’s one reason I’m going to stick with adult Rotties for now.
I know we shape a lot of our pet’s personality so I have a feeling Brody is going to grow up to be one hell of a Golden. π

Our Golden had the Groucho eyebrows too. She’d lay on the floor without moving but the eyebrows would follow you around the room. π
