Koa Go Bragh

March 9, 2011 by Dr. V

Today I had to take the kids for a haircut, and in the way kids do, the stylist at Fantastic Sam’s got to know everything there is to know about their lives.

“Who’s Brody?” she asked my son.

“My dog,” he replied. “He’s a Golden Retriever.”

“Oh, you have a dog,” she said agreeably. “How cool.”

“I have two dogs,” he corrected her. “Brody and Licorice.”

That one was new to me too, so I leaned in closer.

“Licorice?” she asked. “What kind of dog is that?”

“She’s a labrador,” he replied. “She’s Koa, actually, but I call her Licorice.”

“Ah,” the sylist said. “What color licorice?”

“Huh?” asked my son.

“Is she red licorice or black licorice?”

“The gross kind,” I offered.

My son looked bemused. “Not licorice like candy. Lickerish. She licks ALL THE TIME.”

Lickerish has been with us for one year now, if you can believe it. I can hardly believe it myself. Happy One Year in your Forever Home, sweet Koa!

I would like to state for the record that you have been so, so very much less work than Brody. Go older dog rescue! 😀

In honor of the adoptiversary, I am making Koa a cupcake (as opposed to an entire cake- gotta preserve that svelte new form) and I also penned her a Lickerish Limerick.

There was an old dog big and black,

Whose adopters kept giving her back

Why they did I can’t see

But they saved her for me

Now an integral part of the pack!

The dearest, sweetest dog we ever had was a 6 month old Golden Retriever puppy we chose NOT to get the first time around. Through a short series of very sad incidents, she became our Brea and blessed our home for 17 years. Sometimes God knows what he’s doing – in Koa’s case, he gave her heaven and angels early. I, too, have come to love your Lickerish Dog – please give her an extra hug for me today!

Happy adoptaversary, Koa! My Wrigley’s was yesterday, and it’s so hard to believe that he’s been an entire year, but it’s also hard to believe that he hasn’t been here forever. Thank you, Florida Little Dog Rescue, for a wonderful doofus dog!

And Lickerish is a great name!

Is it just me, or does she look less grey than she used to? You’ve given her such a happy, healthy life. I’m so glad you rescued her.

Apparently I’m smoking crack again as I just realized the above picture is from when you first got her. ;-P

Still, I feel as though she has looked increasingly younger in the pics you’ve posted of her over the course of the year.
