Giveaway Tuesday: Kona’s Chips

September 6, 2011 by Dr. V

Congratulations to our winner, Daisy the Curly Cat! Hope you enjoy!!   Welcome back! I hope you all had a good holiday and are feeling nice and rested. To kick off the first official week of pawcurious 2.0, I'm really excited to have a giveaway from Kona's Chips! The company was started in 2007, after the owner's dog Kona became ill after eating dehydrated chicken treats from China. Unfortunately, those kinds of treats have been problematic for lots of pets. Kona's Chips was the ... Read more »

Litter Robot Review

September 5, 2011 by Dr. V

There are litterboxes, and then there are litterboxes. The kind that make you stop in your tracks and say, "Wow. I can't believe I am so impressed by a cat toilet." Since the first time I stood mesmerized watching a Litter Robot in action, I've been coveting one. And because I am lucky, Litter Robot recently sent me one of these mysterious little devices to try out for myself. For such a complicated looking device, it's actually ridiculously easy to put together. Stick the tray in the ... Read more »

Hang 20: Safety First

September 4, 2011 by Dr. V

I am a competitive person. I am the first person to admit this. Although we are doing the Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf a thon to have fun, there is admittedly some small part of me that is whispering, "But next year we're taking this thing." This year we are just trying to stay on the board for a full set. That being said, I'm not one to turn down a surf lesson, so on Sunday Brody and I headed down to the World's Best Dog Beach (aka Coronado) for our lesson with Evan the Surf Instructor. I ... Have a Question?

September 2, 2011 by Dr. V

Health topic you'd like to hear more about? Wondering what Brody and Koa do all day? Dying to know my favorite fruit? I'll be picking questions to answer in the Ask Dr. V section over here. You can send in your questions via the contact form. Questions will be selected at my discretion. That's Spike from Iams, who is mulling over what he might want to ask. As always, if your pet has an immediate health concern, please see your regular veterinarian. I will answer questions about ... Read more »

Surf’s Up Bro! The Hang 20 Surf Dog Experience Part 1

September 2, 2011 by Dr. V

It's a new day, the sun is shining, and this blog is up and running! YES! I can't think of a happier way to celebrate than to talk about our participation in the upcoming Surf Dog Surf-a-thon on September 11th. As you know, Brody and I have given surfing a shot a couple of times, but it's been very casual. So when Eukanuba asked if we would be interested in being sponsored by them to participate, I said "Heck yes!" and then, "But only if you don't have any performance expectations."  ... Read more »

Tagg Takes DC

September 1, 2011 by Dr. V

Yes. Well. I suppose you are looking at the new and spiffy site and thinking, boy, those were some subtle changes. Well, as tends to happen with these things, there was a little glitch in the proceedings so now we are looking at a weekend changeover. No one said progress was easy, right? This is what we call "building suspense." That's OK. I have a great post for Monday anyway. So in the meantime, join me on part II of the BlogPaws recap, why don't you? There are always many fun adventures ... Read more »

It’s National Holistic Pet Day!

August 30, 2011 by Dr. V

I finished a comprehensive course in veterinary acupuncture in 2006. It was intense. Thinking about health from a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine standpoint as opposed to our standard Western approach is just such a different mindset, but once you think about it, it makes sense. Our bodies are not a collection of closed systems that function independently of one another, yet we're trained to treat them that way. Once you step back and see the entire organism as a collective effort, your ... Read more »

Fright Night (not the hurricane. The public speaking.)

August 29, 2011 by Dr. V

I gotta tell you, I was admittedly nervous heading out to DC this weekend for BlogPaws. All last week the talk of the country was this mega storm that was barreling towards the East Coast, not for Florida but for the eastern seaboard exactly where we were supposed to be going. Some family members delicately suggested that I might reconsider going. And I said, no way, because it's BlogPaws and it's my favorite conference of the entire year and I can't not go. So I went, as did the majority of ... Read more »

It's National Dog Day. I am in DC bunkered in for the storm of the century with the greatest people in the world at BlogPaws. There is no one else I would rather weather Pawmageddon with. And it's my birthday. Like I said, banner day! I would love if you post something delightful in the comments today. Cupcakes, ice cream, puppies, otters, you name it. ... Read more »

Guest Post: How to Move with Pets with Less Stress

August 24, 2011 by Dr. V

Today, I'm happy to feature a guest post from moving expert Tim Eyre. Moving is one of the most stressful times in our busy lives, and that goes double for the animals who have no clue why their routines have been upended. So without further ado, here are Tim's tips for making the transition a success! Regardless of whether you're relocating to an entirely new area or just buying a house down the block, moving can be an incredibly stressful and emotional experience. Dealing with things like ... Pass me the monocle

August 23, 2011 by Dr. V

I like to write. I think you probably know that. Whether or not anyone cares to read it, well, I just throw stuff out there and hope someone gets something out of it, but it's kind of a free form endeavor. Which is why I was so thrilled and grateful when Sonia from Nomad Editions Good Dog Magazine asked me if I would write an article for them about my trip to Peru with AmazonCares. Of course, I jumped at the chance. It just came out last week and I've spent the entire time thinking, "Woo ... Read more »

Congratulations to the winners! $50 gift card is Barbara Hubler $20 gift card is Keri Dominguez $20 gift card is Julie Hust   After a particularly bad month, I said to my friends that I felt like a car whose warranty had just expired. My 7 Links: My favorite posts from TripBase blog project

August 22, 2011 by Dr. V

There is a meme making its way around the net, whereby the nominated blogger is to pick seven posts to represent some of their favorite work. Since the lovely Edie at Will My Dog Hate Me and the equally lovely Jen at My Brown Newfies were kind enough to suggest I take part, I spent some time this weekend mulling over my posts from the past couple of years. I'm a forward-thinking kind of person, but it's nice to look back and remember those posts that really tickled me. Or you. Or not. The ... Read more »

The Postman Always Rings Twice

August 19, 2011 by Dr. V

We have a great mailman. I don't know how to explain it, but for all the complaints people have about the US Postal Service we seem to have lucked out with our guy. From the day we moved in when he introduced himself 6 years ago, he's been unfailingly polite, always waving, remembers our name, and pretty much everything you have come to not expect in a federal employee. He showed up at 10 am today with a package I needed to sign for, and we chatted a bit. I signed, he left. A minute later, he ... Read more »

Born to Be Wild: finally getting a movie right!

August 18, 2011 by Dr. V

You all remember the Tyrannosaur movie debacle? It's taken me all this time to work up enough nerve to go to another science museum movie after leaving the theater with two howling kids in tow. In the interim, we went to see Disney's African Cats, which was another hot mess ("Mommy, why are all the kittens dead?" etc) and didn't help my opinion of modern nature documentaries. When I was reading all the sad reviews of African Cats, dubbing it "most depressing nature film ever made" and that ... Read more »

There’s an App for That: Top 6 iphone/ipad apps for pet people

August 17, 2011 by Dr. V

We are an Apple family. Between the iphone, the ipad, and the Mac, I'm constantly on the lookout for the next great app. I love Angry Birds as much as the next guy, but given my background I'm also always hunting down good pet-related products. They've been a little slow to come out compared to other categories, but I'm finally starting to see some quality apps on iTunes that I deem worthy of the bucks. For Back to School Week Wednesday, we're going high tech: Here are my top 6 iphone apps ... Read more »
