Pets and Cancer: What This Vet Wants You To Know

May 2, 2017 by Dr. V

Tonight I spent ten minutes feeding Brody peanut butter on a tongue depressor so I could remove some staples from his chin. 10 days ago he had yet another mass removal. I think we're at four mass removals now, maybe five. Five masses and one ear. At least two of those masses represented dangerous cancers in their early stages, and according to the pathology reports, they are gone. It is one of the things you do when you have a pet, especially a Golden. I do this willingly and gladly, ... Read more »

We Love Pet Products: Caroline and the Barnacle

March 6, 2012 by Dr. V

You all know Caroline Golon, right? She runs the amazing rescue site Romeo the Cat and the wonderful cat resource site The Happy Litterbox and the pet PR site HighPaw and she was one of the co-founder of BlogPaws and she's a great mom to her adorable kiddos and a bunch of other things that, taken in total, make me realize how inadequate my contributions to society have been. Anyway, I make it a goal to surround myself with incredible people like her because I always learn a ton from them- ... Read more »

Let’s play “What Breed are you?”

January 31, 2012 by Dr. V

When I was in school, there was a resident who could best be described as a holy terror. She ate senior students for breakfast, washing it down with the salty tears of our despair when she would mercilessly rip us to shreds in rounds. And hoo boy, did she love me. And by love, I mean, love to rip me up one side and down the other. I was an easy target; I didn't know much at the time. Her very favorite snack. "The patient in room two is a...." I studied the chart..."Belgian ... Read more »

The Pawcurean Presents: Super Simple Chicken Jerky

January 12, 2012 by Dr. V

Chicken jerky is one of those things I had never even thought of trying to make until recently. I know my dogs love it, and until the FDA put out multiple warnings about how imported jerky was making pets ill it was something I included in their treat regimen. About a year ago I got a dehydrator, in one of my occasional crunchy fits of health (it never lasts.) I used it a handful of times and then let it sit on the counter. A few weeks ago, I thought I would try and figure out how to make my ... Read more »

AKC/Eukanuba: Stealing Smooches

January 4, 2012 by Dr. V

Everyone knows you should start the New Year off with a kiss. I love kisses. I live for kisses. Unfortunately for me, when I'm at work most dogs are not really that happy to give smooches. Sure they do at first, but one go with the thermometer and the honeymoon's over. This is one of the reasons I was thrilled to throw on my civvies and hit the Meet the Breeds booths at the AKC/Eukanuba show as a regular Joe. I thought, maybe I could ask owners about their dog's proclivity for herding ... Read more »

What happens when you leave me to my own devices with a mascot and a camera

December 28, 2011 by Dr. V

When Susi from DogKnobIt and I asked if we could dogsit the Eukanuba VP of Canine Communications, Pawl Griffin, for a bit at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, I'm not sure what they were thinking when they agreed. I'm glad they did, though. Because we had a ton of fun. He's a petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, but we decided to see what would happen when we asked breeders of other types of dogs for grooming advice. (For the record, that brilliant idea was Susi's. I thought we should take him ... Read more »

It’s National Get a Pal for your Pet Day!

November 19, 2011 by Dr. V

When I was on the Hope Telethon last weekend talking about pet health holiday tips, the reporter asked me (without warning) if I was going to be bringing home another pet from Helen Woodward. And I answered honestly. If it wouldn't cause a major rift in the household, I would. I can manage 4 pets, and we're at 3. If I can't get a Boston, I'm thinking maybe I could just sneak in another cat for Apollo. He's social, he likes friends. He'd like a pal. My husband remains unconvinced, of ... Read more »

Behind the scenes at a blogathon

November 15, 2011 by Dr. V

Normally when I do these blogathons, I park myself on the couch with a pile of chocolate and a liter of coffee and just go for it. But this year, this year I decided to be ambitious. I will do my blogathon on location, I thought. Let's make it NUTS. The week before, I drove out to the Lions, Tigers and Bears sanctuary to verify they had working wifi. It was slow, but not too slow. Good enough for the blogathon, I figured. My friend Star and I hatched plans. We'll camp out in the bear ... Read more »

Meet your Meat Eaters: The Lions

November 13, 2011 by Dr. V

The Lions of Lions, Tigers and Bears are hungry. Hungry for zombie flesh. Luckily for us we managed to take a few out overnight and we'll be feeding them when it's light out and safe to go back outside. Yesterday, we primed them with a little chicken and catnip. In a pumpkin, because it's festive. Lions, Tigers and Bears goes through chicken shipments by the hundreds of pounds. With 13 cats and 3 bears, that's a lot of mouths to feed. But hoo boy, look how happy it makes ... Read more »

Tagg the Pet Tracker Unboxing

October 22, 2011 by Dr. V

My husband insisted we make an unboxing video for the Tagg the Pet Tracker we received to review this week. Unboxing videos are definitely a guy thing. "What do I do?" I asked. "I haven't gotten to review it yet." "You don't review it," he said. "You just take it out of the box and explain what you see." It makes no sense to me, but I'd watch people unboxing Louboutins all day so I suppose you like what you like. Anyway, I actually have an actual review of the Tagg coming up, but if ... Read more »

Ask Dr V: Nutrition, rotation diets, and high protein

September 30, 2011 by Dr. V

Today I'm showing Part 2 of the Ask Dr V series. I believe, though I haven't checked it against the itinerary, that I should be on my way to the Ngorongoro Crater as we speak. Unless a chimp shoved me off the mountain earlier in the week, in which case these pre-published videos will be on a whole new level of macabre. Which, by the way, my shade would find utterly hysterical. ... Read more »

Ask Dr. V: Petsitters and euthanasia

September 26, 2011 by Dr. V

Before I left, I spent a few minutes answering some of the great questions you submitted for the Ask Dr. V segments. I was on my way to a PTA meeting and had a few minutes to kill, so I figured why not. This was way more interesting, by the way. Do you have a clear understanding with your petsitters or boarding facilities when you leave on a trip? Would you want them to make that call for you? ... Read more »

Hang 20 Part 2: Pool Lessons

September 8, 2011 by Dr. V

With our surf lesson postponed until today, I didn't want to waste this week doing no preparation at all with Brody. So we practiced getting acclimated to the board at home and in the pool. I'm not a surfer myself, so I got on the board to get a feel for the balance involved. It's quite a lot of work. With practice, I'm sure we'll both improve, but in the meantime, I got him to sit on it for a few minutes and that alone is pretty cool. Hope you like Part 2 of Hang 20! ... Read more »

Surf’s Up Bro! The Hang 20 Surf Dog Experience Part 1

September 2, 2011 by Dr. V

It's a new day, the sun is shining, and this blog is up and running! YES! I can't think of a happier way to celebrate than to talk about our participation in the upcoming Surf Dog Surf-a-thon on September 11th. As you know, Brody and I have given surfing a shot a couple of times, but it's been very casual. So when Eukanuba asked if we would be interested in being sponsored by them to participate, I said "Heck yes!" and then, "But only if you don't have any performance expectations."  ... Read more »

A snapshot of surgery

May 27, 2011 by Dr. V

We were a pretty tech-heavy crew in Peru with the April Amazon Cares trip. One of the items I packed was a Flip camera, which unfortunately chose to poop out entirely about one week into the trip. For the first half, though, it was a cool camera to have since I could set it up on a tripod and just film a half hour of activity. I put together about 40 minutes of footage from 2 clinics the first week in Iquitos. I then sped up the footage so you can see all of this in two minutes' worth of ... Read more »

Let’s Go Surfin Now

May 23, 2011 by Dr. V

When I was eight years old, we moved from Massachusetts to San Clemente, California. If you don't know San Clemente, it is pretty much archetypal beach bum heaven. Perpetual sun, wide sandy beaches, and the smell of the salty ocean air at every turn. I hated it. Me, with my East Coast sensibility and hatred of the feeling of sand in between my toes, wanted nothing to do with the SoCal beach scene and couldn't wait to escape from lala land back to the land of autumn leaves, icy roads, and ... The River of Destiny Trailer

April 25, 2011 by Dr. V

Now that I made it back to the luxury of my couch, my Brody-pillow and my reliable plumbing it feels like a dream that I spent the last 2 weeks in the backwoods of Peru. 24 hours ago, I was scratching my bug bites in a third world airport while trying to convince a ticket agent from LAN that 12:40 does not equal midnight and that my ticket was indeed changeable for a nominal fee, all while wishing desperately for a Starbucks. Tonight, I got to enjoy Easter with my family while scratching my ... Read more »
