I always find the end of conferences such a melancholic time. Half the people have left, things are getting broken down, and it's just you and the hum of hotel air conditioning. That is why I ty to leave before the bitter end, so I don't get too despondent. That is what I had planned for BlogPaws. Wraps up Saturday night, and I was going to book it out Sunday morning before I had time to be sad it was over. Well, Irene had other plans, such as winging through DC the very moment I was ... News that’s Fit To Click
Pardon me for my brevity today. I just went to a Katy Perry concert and it struck me both deaf and blind, mostly in a good way, but still. I'm trying out something new to share all these great stories I find over the course of the week: It's the weekly roundup! The FDA approves a drug for steroid-responsive incontinence in dogs. [PetMD] Old dog vestibular disease: a common but mysterious problem. [PetConnection] Dogs helping victims of abuse get through their trial testimony. ... Read more »
Dog is my wingman
I spent much of my time at the BlogHer expo looking for mascots to take pictures with. For all the time I spent doing that, I see I missed at least half of them- Paris over at DogTipper found the Pine Sol lady, the Jimmy Dean sun (who looks exactly like my high school history teacher), and a...piece of Swiffer lint, I guess. Some people have all the luck. That's what I get for going home too early. Nonetheless, I found some singular photo opps myself: A dog from Canine Companions for ... Read more »
Stay Classy, San Diego
There are a lot of reasons I love living in San Diego. Obviously, the weather is a huge draw- although the monoseason climate gets a little depressing come autumn when I miss the fall foliage, I'm grateful for it a month or two later when my New England relatives are posting on Facebook about the three feet of snow they had to shovel out of the driveway. And yes, we have some of the finest Mexican food in the United States (taquitos from Albertos at 3 am for the win!) I love our zoo and the ... Read more »

Wherever I may roam
The fourth of July was lovely. And thank goodness for that, because the fifth was pretty brutal, as it has remained since then. Humid, sticky, 100 degrees plus, the sort of weather that leaves you glued to the couch by your own sweat, unable to get up even if you wanted to, which you don't. Brody goes outside long enough to jump in the pool, then hightails it back into the house to allow it all to evaporate in a nice sauna-dog-smell combo. I used to call this "Hawaii hot." But now, now I call ... Read more »

Good think Brody was not along on this particular walk. I've treated a lot of weird things in my day, but "jellyfish ingestion" would be a new one even to me. ... Read more »

Wordy Wednesday- oops
I had about 4 hours to kill at the Dayton airport yesterday, which I had planned to spend writing a post for today. Unfortunately about 2 seconds after the shuttle dropped us off I realized that in my reverie I left my laptop on the bus. Then Chad, one of the fantastic Paine PR team members, realized his Blackberry was also on the shuttle. Susi, my fellow blogger over at KnobNotes who did not leave anything on the shuttle, was kind enough to capture this dramatic footage of us bemoaning our ... Read more »

A Tale of Two Birdies
There is something strange that comes over you when you become a mother. I don't limit myself to the idea of giving birth as the only way to inherit the title- as we all know, being a parent comes in many forms. The act of accepting responsibility for another living being sets upon your shoulders a weight that, despite its heaviness, you could no more bear to shrug off than your own skin. We've all heard and seen remarkable stories of mothers in nature doing tremendous things in defense of ... Read more »
The Suite Life
In my world, surgery is always done in the same sort of suite: sterile, with bleached floors, bright fluorescent lights that shine with blinding precision upon what needs to be illuminated, and an ergonomic table that can be lifted to the exact height one needs to eliminate those pesky hunchback issues during surgical procedures. Needless to say that is not really the case here in Peru. Here, we stack benches in old schoolhouses, cover pool tables with plastic, and balance a plank on a ... Read more »

Everyone Loves Pets
Some people take their kids to church on Sundays. Others take them to monster truck rallies. Me, I take my kids to as many animal related things as I can find. Sure, we try to fit in some culture here and there, and should they express an interest in attending a sporting event I'm sure we my husband will be happy to take them. But for now while they are young and subject to my whims, we do what I want, so we went to the San Diego Pet Expo this weekend. It was a fun place for the animal ... Read more »
