Hey guys- long time no talk, right? I miss you all. I'm here, though as you probably noticed less so than I used to be. It's by design- lots of stuff in the works as always, and figuring out how this little blog fits in to all of it is always something I think about. People are reading fewer words these days, looking at more pictures, listening to more podcasts. How do we continue to stay in touch in a world whose canvas is ever-changing? Do I even want to try? (Yes. You should always try.) ... Read more »

Summer Reading List, Vet Version
It says right there on my FAQ that I don't do book reviews. Not because I don't like doing it, but because approximately two seconds after the review book arrives I start to get emails: "didyougetitdidyoulikeitwhensthereview" from the publishing house interns whose job it is to do things like that. Which is completely fine, except for the fact that I don't read very quickly and I just couldn't handle the pressure. I will do book reviews, just as long as no one cares when I get around to it. ... Giveaway: Scent of the Missing
It's cold. It's dark. And you need something to read to get your mind off the apocalypse. How about Scent of the Missing? Here's the description: In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson clipped a photo from the newspaper of an exhausted canine handler, face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog. A dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, Susannah was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team and soon discovered ... Read more »
Book Lover’s Giveaway Tuesday: The Dog Who Knew Too Much
There are few things I like to do to unwind more than read a good book. When I was growing up, that was my family's weekend pasttime of choice, my father with his Louis L'Amour, my mother with a biography, and me, sprawled sideways on the overstuffed chair with an Isaac Asimov. I told you I was a nerd. That's a good thing, though- it kept me out of trouble (mostly) for a long time. Reading is inherently relaxing and stimulating all at once, lacking the passivity of TV or the computer. I wish I ... Read more »

Am I Bored By This Book? (clue: no)
When I was at Blog Paws in Columbus, I attended a panel featuring Edie Jarolim of Will My Dog Hate Me. An accomplished travel writer already, Edie was indoctrinated rather late in life compared to the rest of us crazies in the world of dog obsession. She made up for it admirably, though. Am I Boring My Dog is the happy result of what was clearly some pretty thorough crash-course research into dog ownership, a soup-to-nuts guide to pretty much everything you need to know when bringing a ... Book review: Marcus of Umbria
I like pet memoirs. I read them a lot. Marley and Me, My Dog Skip, you name it, I've sobbed over it. I also like women-finding-themselves memoirs. Like thousands of other women, I flipped raptly through Eat, Pray, Love, planning my own trip to Italy to eat my way to self-discovery. The two are entirely different beasts, really. While the chick-lit books usually detail the author's myriad trials in search of the ultimate love with the man of her dreams, most of the well known dog memoirs ... Read more »
Book Review and Giveaway: Scent of the Missing
If you've been a regular reader of the blog, you know I'm a big fan of the dog memoir. Part treacle, part drama, part romance, the format is always the same, ending of course with the tearful goodbye to a faithful pup. Susannah Charleson's new book Scent of the Missing breaks that mold in all the right ways. Of course, the requisite components are there: an adorable dog, the initial bumps in the road adjusting to a new puppy, and the gradual coming together of owner and pet. Here's the ... Read more »
