The Pawcurean: Frosty Paws at home!
It's hard to tell from the gloomy grey skies outside, but theoretically, it's the height of summer. That means grilling corn, runny popsicles, and coming up with ways to help the fur-bearing house dwellers beat the heat. Linda over at the 7MSN Ranch sent me a link to her blog post detailing a way to make a homemade version of Frosty Paws, which I have shamelessly replicated here. Even if you don't want to make Frosty Paws, you should go check her blog out. It is awesome. It has a lot more types ... Read more »
The Hairy Hambone
As you may have heard, this weekend marked the annual Comic-Con. What this means in practice is that over 100,000 of the world's hardiest hardcore nerds descend upon our fair city, bringing with them their finest Storm Trooper costumes and zombie paraphernalia. Each year my husband, a lifelong attendee, takes this opportunity to bring out his dusty boxes of comics from his youth to flip through them and figure out if any of them are worth anything. They never are. In honor of this festive ... Read more »

Wheat Thin Theater: Pinocchio Faces Monstro
A scene from Pinocchio, starring Brody, Koa and a tasty Wheat Thin. Upon returning home, Jiminy and Pinocchio find the workshop empty and soon learn from a letter by the Blue Fairy that Geppetto, while venturing out to sea to rescue Pinocchio from Pleasure Island, had been swallowed by a giant whale named Monstro. Geppetto: Pinocchio! Where are you, my boy? Geppetto: Uh oh. ... Read more »

I’ll get you, my pretty! And your little warts too!
Today, I decided little Kekoa might enjoy a day at doggie daycare. Why not? I had a reservation I wasn't going to be able to use for Brody anyway. Why is that, do you ask? Poor Brody is persona non grata at doggie daycare. You see, he has warts. Canine viral papillomas, to be more specific- a common affliction in dogs, seen most often in young pups who go to dog parks, or, erm, doggie daycares. So no matter that this very place is the most likely reason he got it in the first place, until ... Read more »
Baking With Brody
I didn't actually set out to do a cooking segment here, but about halfway into birthday cake production I decided it needed to be documented, so there you go. Unfortunately I didn't come to this realization until the cake was already baked, but at least I got to photograph the fun part: decorating! Cake decorating is kind of like surgery, sort of. You need knives, precision, and someone else to help clean up the mess. It is a match made in heaven. I started with the recipe for Peanut ... Read more »
Party animals!
*I don't know what is going on with Flickr- the pictures are randomly not showing up here and there- each time I refresh different ones become available. Hopefully it will be working more normally later on. Curses!! I divided the weekend pictures into two parts but I'm actually going in reverse chronological order. The first part, "Baking With Brody", will go up later this week because a couple people asked for the recipe for his birthday cake. The second part is just us being silly having ... Read more »

Did you enter the contest? It's not closing until Sunday night, so you still have time! I've been too busy partying to do anything else. I am afraid this is not the last time I will be subjecting you to party pictures. We took a lot of pictures, you see. I'm just getting started. The making of the cake was a story in itself. I even took pictures. Let's just say I've been spending too much time here and leave it at that. ... Read more »
Happy Birthday Brody!!
One year ago today, I was in an emergency room with my vomiting daughter fighting with an ER doc about the most appropriate course of action. It was a bad day. Several hours north of us, a little Golden retriever was giving birth to a litter of puppies: 8 robust golden beauties and one, slightly darker, rusty puffball. One year later, he is a 65 pound whirlwind of trouble, fur, love, and goofiness resting under my feet. He is a reminder of what is important, what is real, and what can be ... Read more »
How do we honor our pets?
Brody's first birthday is tomorrow. I've got some great recipes to use for a birthday cake. The kids wanted a birthday party- it's all their fault, I swear- so we will have one this weekend. I had a nice long list of all sorts of amazing luxury collars and various sundry goods that I wanted to get for Brody for this once in a lifetime event- and honestly, this is the first time I've had a young one year old dog to celebrate a first birthday with, so this really is an unusual thing for ... On safari: It’s Good to be King
It's springtime on the savannah, and our Goldenbeast is growing up. With his first birthday rapidly approaching, the Goldenbeast is reveling in his newfound authority, standing on the precipice of adulthood just as springtime waits to ascend into summer. He has, for example, taken ownership of prime savannah real estate. ... Read more »
Juvenile delinquent
When my daughter's class went to Sea World earlier this week (I know, don't get me started) I was not asked to chaperone. That was OK with me, for several reasons: 1. I got to chaperone the awesome trip to the wildlife preserve in January. 2. You all know how I feel about Sea World. One other reason: I found out that many of the parents invited to chaperone were so asked because the teacher was afraid that without direct parental supervision, their children would end up running around ... Last Saturday, we packed up the whole crew and went to the beach so Brody could take a surfing lesson. I admit it was a bit of an ambitious plan considering I hadn't even taken him to the beach yet, but the opportunity presented itself and I found it irresistible. C'mon, we're talking about a dog named Brody- if ever there was a name fit for a surfer, that is it. The surf lesson was organized by the local Golden Retriever Meetup group, which is really active and puts on amazing events on a ... Read more »
