Mother's Day

Why I Hate That Stupid Mom Pie Quote

May 22, 2017 by Dr. V

"A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie."    -Tenneva Jordan Last week, my husband sold the U2 tickets he bought for us back in January because it conflicted with my daughter's school play. I'm not gonna lie, it was painful, but sometimes you have to put things aside when you're a parent. I say sometimes, though, because I think that's an important distinction to make in the Pinterest era where everyone ... Read more »

Life is Short. Buy the Boots.

May 5, 2016 by Dr. V

If grief were a color, it would be slate. Not an angry obsidian black, or a peaceful dove grey, but that shapeshifting silver somewhere between black and white, a stormy sea that some days seems blue, others almost brackish, depthless and impossible to truly describe. If it were a shape, it would be a spiral, a shape you ride on in a neverending loop of centrifugal force splattering you against the wall whether you will it or not, bringing you back again and again to the same spot, from a ... Hi, I love you, yep

May 9, 2013 by Dr. V

Yesterday, I went on a field trip with my daughter's class as a chaperone. I was reminded, yet again, of why I became a veterinarian. The teacher is an angel on earth and I do not, for one second, think I could do what she does. I watched one nine year old dissolve into an inconsolable heap of tears because she lost during a game of Red Rover. I watched another child, who was walking barefoot on the park grass, get called over by her mother and told to apply hand sanitizer to her feet at ... Read more »

Have a Happy Mother’s Day- and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise

May 11, 2012 by Dr. V

A few days ago, my friend Dorian at Catster pointed out a rather mean-spirited post over at Huffington Post entitled, "Pet Parents are NOT Moms." I am trying to give the author the benefit of the doubt here; maybe she intended it to be sort of tongue in cheek. She starts by pointing out all the sometimes over the top things we do in the name of love- and I get that, been there, bought the membership card- but the overall tone of the post just skewed off left and went straight to mean. And that ... Read more »

Top 10 Reasons Being a Pet Mom Rules

May 6, 2011 by Dr. V

As Mother's Day approaches, I look forward to the carefully painted foam picture frame and the 10 inch bead bracelet my kids have made for me and not so carefully hidden away. I also can't wait for the gummy omelet and watered down mimosas at the overcrowded Mother's Day brunch. I mean that sincerely. It is a rite of passage shared the world over, born of love and gratitude, and I wouldn't trade my lot in life for the world. That being said, coming into my seventh Mother's Day as an ...
