A Veterinarian’s Holiday Wish

December 2, 2014 by Dr. V

It's the holidays, and that means lots of things: peace on Earth, goodwill to men! Just kidding, it means cranky people fighting in the parking lot, someone getting shanked over the last PlayStation, and passive aggressive fruitcake gifts. I wasn't always this cynical. I, too, was once a merry-eyed elf with stars in my eyes and garland round my neck, until I worked long enough in veterinary medicine. Then I began to dread the month of December. It is a month of ill portents: Too ... Read more »

3 Ways to Show your Tech You Love Them

October 17, 2012 by Dr. V

Continuing with our celebration of Veterinary Technician Week, I wanted to offer all of you a quick and easy 3 ways you can make your tech shine like the top of the Chrysler Building next time you go to see your vet. Because they deserve it. 1. Bring food But make sure you specify those cookies are for the TECHS. Because I have seen it. I have seen plates of cookies come in for the vet, and the vet does not interpret "for the vet" as "for the team" and takes them all home. NOT COOL. This was ... Read more »

Have you thanked your tech today?

October 16, 2012 by Dr. V

This week marks the 20th iteration of National Veterinary Technician Week. I can't tell you just how happy I am to see this group of professionals get recognized for the work they do. They have one of the most ridiculously challenging jobs on the planet for what is, comparably speaking, miniscule pay, high risk of injury, and often emotionally draining work. As so often happens in many professions, vets get all the glory and all the kudos, the cookies at Christmas and the hugs for a job well ... Read more »

The true hero of the story: a Pet Doctor Barbie Post

July 13, 2011 by Dr. V

A couple times a year, I take a stroll through Toys R Us to see if there is a new Pet Vet Barbie being inflicted upon the masses. There's a cat vet one, which I bought just because she has a slide on the exam table and that alone was worth the price- I mean, what cat doesn't love going down a slide at the vet clinic?- but that's not what really got me excited. The Barbie I had to grab was the Fashionista Barbie. Those babies have moveable joints. MOVEABLE JOINTS! Now, why fashionistas need ... Read more »

Have you hugged a tech today?

October 12, 2010 by Dr. V

Did you know the third week of every October is National Veterinary Technician Week? I can't think of a more deserving, hardworking group of people to celebrate. Vets get all the glory, all the cards and cookies, but techs are so often the ones who neglect to get any recognition for the incredible amount of work they put into keeping pets healthy. They man the phones, hold pets for all manner of procedures, do the vast majority of nursing care for hospitalized pets, and bear the brunt of the ... Read more »
